Retrofit Ceiling Heating System with Electric Radiant Heat

A couple contacted us about heating their home recently.  They needed to replace their existing heating system and wanted an option that would be more comfortable, healthier and less expensive to operate.  This home was a 1970’s 4 level split with little or no access to the attic and all 4 levels were finished.  We proposed a retrofit heating system with electric radiant heat installed in the ceiling as the easiest and least invasive option to fit all their needs.

Solution

A ceiling retrofit system can be installed above the sheetrock in homes that have access to the attic or space above the ceiling.  However, for this home it was best to install it below the existing ceiling on all 4 levels.

Calculations

Most importantly, a heat loss calculation is done to assess how many heating panels are needed for each room. Therefore, quantity and size of windows, doors and insulation values and all determining factors.

Preparation

To start a new ceiling joist system is placed using furring strips. Furring strips are placed at 24″ on center.  The direction and placement of the heating panels maximize the comfort and efficiency. The results are a warm and comfortable space from ceiling to floor.

Execution

Consequently, the heating panels are placed per factory recommended layout and wired in parallel.  Each room has its own control/thermostat. However, based on their proximity some rooms can be combined. For instance, a kitchen and dining room can be on one thermostat/controller. Subsequently, once wiring is complete, tested and inspected. After that the sheetrock can be placed. After that, paint and enjoy.

Finished Product

Certainly, an improvement from the popcorn ceiling of the 70’s. Above all and quite literally, there’s an invisible radiant heating system warming from “Above”.

Invisible Heating System

In conclusion, the house is updated with an invisible and efficient heating system. Above all, operating costs are lower, the environment is healthier and more comfortable. Radiant warmth in every space. Subsequently, the ThermaRay heating system will last the life of the home.
